Norway may have become the most wanted site of attraction, modern and a peaceful country. but it's history is soaked in blood and from within it rose the perennial struggle to be taken seriously as a sovereign, independent country

1. Geography and Climate

The human presence in Norway was for thousands of years overshadowed by Norway’s geography and climate, During the last ice age, Norway was barely inhabitable but as the climate warmed and Norway became increasingly habitable different people from all over europe became attracted to the hunting and fishing which the rivers promoted. more permanent structures of buildings, boats and cemetrys were made and settled cultures began to take root.

2. Vikings, Conquest and Expansion

Viking raids transformed Scandinavia from an obscure backwater on Europe’s northern fringe to an all-powerful empire.Viking raids increased standards of living at home they also created complex social institutions.

3. Spread Of Religion

Christianity began its rise in Norway after Vikings settled.Often times Vikings took on the religion as advantage only to appease the Englishmen so they would allow them to settle and farm in their lands.Those who propagated the pagan Norse gods were harassed or even killed.

4. Decline of the viking age

Denmark and Sweden were two enemies of Norway. Viking King Olav Tryggvason (Olav I) wife had refused to convert to christanity and had married the pagan king, Svein Forkbeard of Denmark defeating Olav in a great Baltic sea-battle, then took Norway as their own.

5. A New Start

Norwegians began to rediscover a sense of their own, independent cultural identity.Oslo was declared the national capital of the Kingdom of Norway,In 1911 the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole.Two years later Norwegian women became among the first in Europe to be given the vote.

Oil was discovered in 1960’s and since then the economy boomed making it europe’s one of the richest country.
